The Dunkirk City School District Board of Education has approved the relocation of students for the 2021-2022 school year.
Under this relocation plan:
Students in grades K-2 will be located in School 3, School 5 and School 7.
Students in grades 3-5 will join students in grade six at what is currently the Dunkirk Middle School building. Students in grades 7&8 will be relocated to the current Dunkirk High School building.
School 4 will not physically house students for the 2021-2022 school year.
The District has been considering relocation plans to address both the efficiency of district operations and the fiscal health of the district as well as the effectiveness of the district’s student programming. Initially the relocation plan was considered with regard to fiscal concerns. However, as the relocation plan was studied and developed the potential benefits to students and staff became increasingly apparent. The Effectiveness and Efficiency Committee and subsequent sub-committees in concert with staff meetings and parent meetings, encouraged further conversation regarding potential benefits for students.
The Board of Education and the Superintendent are confident that this relocation offers students and staff an improved opportunity to return from the COVID-19 pandemic and begin to address anticipated learning loss and social emotional effects of the pandemic. Although the physical relocation of students is an important step, it is only the beginning of an ongoing process to improve student outcomes.
